Bewarn: Virus Spreading

Just as I wrote in my previous post of how Medan’s Piaget school is taking tedious precautions against swine flu…. darn… my both sons are down with high fever …

Friday 17 July 2009

@ 2:45pm: Jadon came home informing me how 2 of his friends have slight fever and being sent home…

@ 6:00pm: Jadon’s body can be felt warm…

Saturday 18 July 2009

@ 2:oo am: Jadon is down with fever and having slight cough with body temperature of 39C …

I didn’t think much,…  so I nursed him with Tempra and cough medicine… only that his temperature wouldn’t come down..

@ 4:00 pm: his temperature is at 40C… by then.. we went over to Gleni Hospital Medan… and see a paediatrician who did not take any body temperature… and simply prescribed him with antibiotics… I was worrying rather sickly as often.. if the fever is caused by cough.. his throat will be red and that it is nothing for me to be worried about…but his throat is fine..  and now.. with his body being resistant to the medication, he is definitely infected with a virus.. as I have suspected and confirmed by the doctor…

Sunday 19 July 2009

Jadon’s body temperature is still in the range of 38.5C-39.8C and hardly come down… should his temperature remains this high… I really think I have to whisk him off to Singapore for the treatment ….  I am hoping to fly back to Bangkok.. but with his high body temperature… I doubt he will ever pass the immigration in Singapore and most likely be quarantine first …. however… apart from the high body temperature… he has no other symptoms which I am hoping for the best and that…  it’s just some common viruses…

throughout the day, Tempra is being given to him every 5 hours…

I sincerely hope that it’s not the deadly swine flu… but my sister-in-law received messages that several children in Piaget are down with high fever and some have been tested positive for the Swine Flu…  I can’t get confirmation from school since it’s a public holiday… but I hate rumors so I am not gonna make any judgment from the messages…

I then did an online Swine Flu Symptoms Checker and the result pointed out that… they can’t confirm and that Jadon needs further health check….

Monday 20 July 2009,

@ 3:00am: Jadon’s being given last shot of Tempra with body temperature at 38.5C

@ 7:00am: Jadon’s body temperature is finally down to normal at 37C BUT Elson is now officially infected…..

I am now waiting to see Jadon’s condition within the next few hours… should his temperature remains not over 38C, I am quite sure it is not swine flu….  nevertheless… I am gonna quarrantine both boys to home for the whole week… and they just have to do home schooling with this worn out mummy….

should your kids are down with fever, I suggests seeing either Professor Syaril Pasaribu or Dr Chairul Yoel @ Gleni Hospital…  both are paediatrician whom I would consider up-to-date specialist… often seen attending the latest seminar whom I have known them relatively well… and both specialize in virus infection…. (the one I saw was the only one available on the day and time, hence I have no other choice)

Vic, both my sister-in-law’s and aunt’s kids were down with high fever on Thursday-Friday. The rumour saying that almost the whole class of P1 was down with fever is apparently true, as my aunt’s son is in that class. He coughed at first, then suddenly developed very high fever. She took him to Dr Chairuddin and wondered if it could be the swine flu. The paeditrician told her that it wasn’t and it’s only a virus infection. Apparently the virus is in “trend” right now, as the doctor put it. Her son recovered the next day. My sister-in-law’s son recovered the next day too. With this extreme weather (when it’s hot, it’s fizzling and when it rains, it does so like a blizzard), it’s no wonder that young children are the ones who will be down with illness first. I’m also contemplating to quarantine my son at home for meanwhile, but as he has not shown any symptoms and still remain active, I guess I’ll take him to school tomorrow and see how the situation in the school develops. Take care and wish both of your gems get well soon.

Btw, I have never tried Tempra before, but Panadol syrup for kids always work wonders for my son whenever he develops fever. I’m a kiasu mom in the sense that if his temperature reaches 37.5 I’d start giving him the medication. I have no idea how local Panadol will work, so I always ask my mom who often stops by Singapore to stock up some for me. But some of my colleagues swear by Tempra too.

    hi marsangel

thanks for the info… at least i am sure now that it’s not swine flu… so far.. Jadon is ok… not as bad now… and we have confirmation from a friend’s daughter in P1.. apparently she has the same symptoms on Friday but is doing better now too…

as for the Tempra and panadol… i believe they have the same type of medication for the same purpose… pain killer… I normally stock both… and depends on the kids mood .. sometimes they prefer the taste of one rather than the other… I have started using the local ones… so far so good… just like you.. I was stocking all kinds of medi from overseas… but I have stopped now… except for the few that is not available here…

I think the virus affects the children more than the adults… though my husband is now down with slight temperature as well as some of his friends… just watch out then…

as for the boys… the are better but still with temperature… heard that only 1/3 of Jadons’ classmates were present on Tuesday…

Anak 101 = Paracetamol. The Apotik (pharmacies) in Australia always stock a kids formula of paracetamol. Its a sweet syrup, easy for kids to swallow. If not available, an apotik could make it up very easily.

Gleni Hospital was good for my friend. They had stocks of anti-virals on hand at Bule prices. And she came thru after bird flu, no real problems.

Marsangel got it right. Every parent should have paracetamol stock on hand. The paracetamol will be the same (kemia sama) if in proper packaging from reliable supplier.

The whole point is to address the high temperatures in kids. Over 40 degrees C and they can fibrillate and die.

    http://www.pharmweb.net/pwmirror/pwy/paracetamol/pharmwebpicdosage.html

… shows dose rates. Especially important as the child DROPS are stronger than the child SYRUP.

As always, read the label. Use only as recommended. Babies are especially prone to problems where there’s over-dosing. (Liver etc). And there’s a link between paracetamol use in children and childhood asthma, but that’s being debated in Academe.

    Best wishes
