The Fun in Thailand Dec’ 08

Here are some of the more interesting stuff you can do in Thailand apart from the well known cheap shopping of Bangkok.. This is one of the two annual family trip to Thailand.. we were in luck that the International Airport opened in time before we flew out of Medan.

First stop was at the HuaHin Hyatt Regency Hotel, about 2.5 hrs drive from Bangkok.. it’s a small and quiet beach seaside resort where the Thai King reside at the moment…  The hotel was having a bargain promotion so, we took up the offer and spent a week there…

hua hin beach The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

This is the view that we looked out to when we lied down on one of the swimming beach chair… My front view is the kid’s swimming pool and the back view is this gorgeous clear blue sea that just took your breath away…

hua hin sand The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

The swimming pool of this hotel has the lagoon style.. big and long winding, while at the kids pool is surrounded by sand.. sort of like mini beach on the side of shallow kids pool… It’s very child friendly and its one of those pool where I just put on the right gear for the boys and they will just have fun on their own while the parents can relaxed the beautiful days…

hua hin water slide The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

but the main attractive and one of the main reason why we keep going back to this resort is for this wild water slide…  we all love it.. anyone.. and literally.. young and old… have a blast with this slide… Jadon got so used to it that he practically slided down in different styles.. head down, flat down, side up, etc .. and he often screamed … “to the infinity and .. beyond !!!“… everytime that he was up there…

hua hin hyatt The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

The hotel also provide a wide range of other interesting activities that kids, adults or families can participate… above is the morning fish feeding time…

hua hin hyatt1 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

as Christmas was near.. we were among the few guests that participate in the Christmas tree light up… and what I like is that.. on the tree, the hotel organised for several of the underprivilege kids to write what they wish for Christmas on a card which were then being placed on the tree…. and us the guests can contribute… the wishes are of mostly school stuff… so my family fulfilled 2 wishes… giving a set of new school bag and Doraemon stationary…

Next… we then went up North to ChiangMei to celebrate the Old and New Celebration 08/09…

chiang mei elephant trekking The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

I took the kids for elephant trekking… this is their second time and they are still amused and excited with the whole experienced…  looking at the photos is not as exciting as the real experience… the ride was wobbly… we trekked up the mountain and across small rivers… going down hills was the scariest of all… my in-laws just loved it… and it just made me so happy to see all the family members have the glowing big smile on their face….

chiang mei elephant trekking3 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

after about 45 mins of the trekking, we then watched the elephant shows… the highlight was to see these elephants draw and after which, they sell off the painting to support the elephant foundations… though I doubt about it…

elephant drawing1 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08 elephant drawing 1 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

wonder how these cute big elephants did it?, actually the caretaker hold on to the Tusk and guide the elephants with the painting… I was poking fun at my 2 boys since the elephants seem to have better drawing skills than both of them… both boys turned around to give me their small angry looking face….

bamboo rafting 1 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

next we then went on the bamboo rafting down a small river… its was a nice tone down of the body adreline before we finished the whole 4 hours tour …

chiang mei 08 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

chiang mei 08 1 The Fun in Thailand Dec 08

what you see above is the paper lantern that the Thais light up on special occasion.. which in this case is to celebrate the New Year…  We stayed at one of the mountain resort and we asked the hotel to arrange for these… we lighted up about 50 of them (cost about 80 baht = Rp 30.000 each).. making hard wish for the coming New Year… It was very beautiful… my younger son Elson loved it so much… so much so that he ran to each one to hold and let go before they flew off into the beautiful night sky….

ChiangMei is best experienced in Nov / Dec / Jan.. when the temperature is nice and cooling.. so taking the elephant rides or doing any of the activities are not as tiring compared to other times of the year… The temperature drop down to about 18C while we were there… though not as cold as after we left which fell to about 12C…

Camping in Thailand

This is a much delayed post.. but it’s so much fun that I really want to share with all of you..it’s one of the activities that I did while I was back in Bangkok in June 08..

I have never done camping before and with kids having watched so much of Barney and how schools always mentioned camping to the kids BUT will never ever experienced it….. so, I decided to plan a camping for my two lovely sons with lots of fun activities…

as we know that camping involved staying in a Tent and bringing all the packed foods, stuff, etc.. frankly.. it’s too much of a hassel for me to dealt with.. so instead I put us in what we Thai called a Boutique TENT…!!

The place is at Khao Yai.. a famous national park with much nature.. and is about 3 hours drive from Bangkok… when I first told my husband and my dad that we are going on a camping and staying in a tent.. both of them scolded me and whined on how silly of me to spend USD$65 per night staying in a tent… you see, the 2 big guys were imagining that they have to set up the tent, crawl into it and sleep on the ground.. like the real kids movies…

and so, when we arrived at the hotel, they were in shocked and as we walked towards the tent, they got just as excited as my 3.5 y.o and 5 y.o …

thailand camping

The tent is in the compound of a 4 star resorts.. so.. its all provided and set up for me… I don’t have to bring/buy any of the camping necessities .. ^0^

thailand camping

better yet.. its comes with ensuite bathroom and beds… !!!.. PLUS fully air conditioned.. ahhah… the tent also comes with a fridge, room service and TV…

thailand camping

The tent is surrounded with clean greenery… and the place do have several spots for picnic.. as the night falls, we were worried that the kids won’t be able to sleep and if they will be scared since its the first time that they stayed outdoor…

what happened was that, the kids fell asleep like a pig, while me and my hubby couldn’t.. not that the beds were uncomfortable, its actually the ghostly feeling… I have to entertain myself with ipod till 3am in the morning…

khao yai thailand

As Khao Yai is a nature place, hence what you find in the areas are very outdoor activities, like the Buxter that we rode on… the kids just loved it…

khao yai thailand

then you have the mini real motorised bikes .. don’t they just look cool and real gangster… but, no.. these bikes aren’t for them… in fact its for us.. the adults!!!

khao yai biking

thats me.. trying really hard to balance.. its not fun for me but simply doing it to entertain the kids and let them laughed at me.. the center will provide you with a disposal head cap for hygiene before you have to put on the real helmet…

khao yai thailand

there’s the standard rock climbing… but I prefer the one below…

khao yai thailand

Its specially built, you will need to climb and complete each section where each ones are tougher than the next… and once you reached the top, you get back down by taking the flying fox…

khao yai thailand

Its so so so much fun….

Then on the second day, we took the kids to a milk farm, the farm ChokChai.. it’s one of thailand’s leading milk producer.. the owner has the love for cowboy, so he decided to convert part of his vast extensive farm land into an interesting in house company tour.. where at the same time, they do have the camping facilities as well but it’s a bit overpriced..

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

THE FARM CHOKCHAI

In there, you need to pay for the standard 2.5-3 hours tour.. its quite interesting for the kids though…

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

The lady explained the methods and the technologies used on how they get the milk .. so for now.. at least my sons seem to appreciate their milk better now.. but best of all.. they get to see their daddy milk the cow…

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

when they asked for a volunteer, my 3 y.o was eagerly raising his hands as he really want to have the try, and since that he was too young, my husband, seeing the boys face turned gloomy, being a good daddy, he just gave in and did it…

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

the tour then proceed to the ice cream factory..

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

then the kids watched the cow boy shows.. and we were given free time to do horse riding, but instead, being boys, they each chose to go for 2 rounds of ATV…

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

that’s Jadon, my 5 y.o on his ATV… he begged, cried, whinned till we finally have to give in.

mini-zoo khao yai thailand

and the all time favourite mini zoo.. the kids get to play and feel the real farm animals like, sheep, duck, goats etc.. and feed them food… it’s kind of make the kids feel like they are in the Barney movies.. you see..

and have you ever wonder how a Drangon Fruit trees look like… here it is… very cute though

farm chokchai khao yai bangkok thailand

Personally, Khao Yai Thailand is one of those places that kids as well as adults will enjoyed and bond the family.. it’s a good place for the kids to experience rather than the usual city sightseeing, shopping, beach… since we came back, they have been asking to go back… for their modern camping again…

Its also one of those places that I wish the Greenhill @ sibolangit should implement as an extra… though I did mentioned to the management but they kind of finding me weird when I told them the concept…

Medan Private Schools

Choosing a school for your child education is a big headache for many parents. For many of us in Medan, it’s sure not an easy tasks. Some six-seven years back, the private schools can hardly be found. Below are my views for the top selected schools currently in Medan.

Medan International School. This is the one and the only original International school in Medan. I have seen and visited the school some 6 years back when I was pregnant with my first child. At the time, I was very worried about the public school standards and was planning to put him in there. However, I was told that since the school is accepting only 20% Indonesian students, my boys will be on the waiting list. I was quite surprise that me being a Thai though my husband is a local is not allowed. To be considered as an International student, my boys need to hold the KITAS or KITAP permit. Honestly, though the school property is old and in need of renovation, I very much like the school surrounding and the security in place for the safety of the children, but the distance from town to school is quite a big problem.

I have since talked to some parents and was told that the major problem that my kids will face is that, these MIS students are constantly on the move, so my children will not have their so called group of friends. That to me is definitely not a healthy choice but again it’s not an avoidable situation for the parents.

Then came along the Piaget Academy and Singapore International School (SIS), though I am relatively happy with my boys being at the Singapore Piaget Academy at the moment, it’s worrying that the numbers of students are growing so fast and yet the school is not expanding fast enough. And somehow, my eldest son is picking up the Singapore slang like… wait lah.. how come like that.. why like that.. mama hor.. it’s funny and even more so as he was trying to say the word so that he can feel as part of the group coz as he said those phases, it does not sound natural…. The teachers in Piaget are a mixture – for mandarin class you get teachers from China so they are getting the proper mandarin and for English, so far we have the Philipino teachers which I am relatively happy about. As for assistance teachers, they are either the local Medanese or the Local Jakarta.

To consider putting your child at SIS, worst! The school have been promising parents with regards to the new school building for the past 3 years, none ever realized. The latest update is that, the school will move to Royal Sumatera next month!! I was there to check out, my thought is that, even with July 2009, its hard to even considered done.

Then you have the American System at Highscope Medan. Both of my boys are there for the early childhood program which in my opinion is the BEST in town. But as they need to enter the Kindergarten and the elementary level, I feel that all round facilities are inadequate. Teachers are local but are sent for training at Jakarta. The school has the home like feeling and very child friendly.

Another well known private school is Prime One at Jl. Katamso. I have yet to check that out. Nevertheless, the feedbacks for the school have been good so far. For now, I can only sit tight and hope that my husband will finally realize my dream of moving the boys out of Medan.
