Hi Pauline..

from my past experiences… I look for the following in order of my priorities..

1st: graduate from overseas.. else at least with overseas practice

2nd: graduated in the late 90’s or early 2000s

3rd: a professor or an assistant professor since they are the ones that know best of the latest medication and technology for the treatment

4th: their look… I go for the smart nerd looking ones.. ^0^

so far.. with my selection criteria… I have been very happy with the doctors there… if you are unsure.. simply email them directly with your concerns…

FYI.. the hospital has a counter at the Bangkok International airport inside the arrival hall… they provide shuttle bus to the hospital at bht 1000pp which will be credited back to your hospi bill… i.e. complimentary if you use the hospi services…

This is a great post on Bumrungrad, I was searching for it because I want to go there for an operation which is really expensive in the States. Can you tell me how you chose a doctor? I went to the directory listing at the Bumrungrad website, and there were 10 doctors to choose from. I wasn’t sure how to proceed…is there a way to check the quality of a doctor/complaints.

Thank you for the offer. I sure will contact you when my family and I need to get checkups done. I told my mom about Bumrungrad yesterday after reading your post, and I checked it out on the net. I must say I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen and found out about it so far. It happened that someone had already told my mom about an excellent hospital in Bangkok on her last trip to Singapore taking care of my grandpa. My mom knew about it way before I did, and she couldn’t even operate a computer. Go figure. My mother was worried about language barriers though, seeing that none of us can speak any Thai and her English is limited. I know there are interpreters in the hospital, but it will be soooo much better if they set up a representative here so they could help us arrange travel to the hospital back and forth and advise us on which doctors to see. But now I’m sure I can count on emailing you for any advices. Thanks a lot!

firstly, sorry to hear about your grandfather…

actually… I just got back from the hospital, coz hubby needs to see the cardiologist…. this time he blankly pointed out to us how the cardiologist in singapore has OVERDONE on both my in laws….

i do agree with you that in Singapore, the doctors tend to ping-pong the patients… hence, ended… patients spent a lot of money… it’s crazy how they make things so unclear and make us wait and being impatient to explain to us the cause as well as the treatments…

I must thank you for featuring a new hospital for us to consider! My family have really bad experiences with Singapore’s doctors recently. My grandfather demanded a thorough check up, including endoscopy because his father passed away from stomach cancer, back in September 2008 because he started to have difficulty digesting his meals. His GP refused, laughing at him because he’s afraid of contracting the disease. Then at late April this year, he demanded another endoscopy, to which his doctor refused again and explained that his blood test was normal. He went to Penang, and only there that he knew there were tumours in his stomach. The doctors in Penang wanted him to undergo surgery although they weren’t completely sure. My grandfather flew back to Singapore immediately and my uncle accompanied him.

We looked for the best doctors and oncologist in Singapore (I’m sure you know who this oncologist is, he’s the most famous there). We’re told it’s already at Stage IV, and that nothing much can be done except ease his pain and prolong his life by undergoing surgery and series of chemotherapies. Now, if only his GP recommended a certified practicioner to perform an endoscopy back in September, his cancer could still be cured. The famous oncologist first assured us there was hope of total cure, now he said we could only prolong his life to maximum 2 years.

My father wanted to have an endoscopy performed as well last month, and his regular doctor refused because he said it was not necessary although my father had gastric pains (and afraid of contracting stomach cancer too because his own father died from that same cancer). Only after we insisted that we found out that he wasn’t certified to perform the procedure and he had to refer us to other specialist. After the endoscopy, the specialist referred my father back to the first doctor, so on and so forth. I don’t think I need to say how much money was spent on these two doctors, when the specialist was definitely capable of diagnosing and treating my father.

Really, do they think we in Indonesia here print money like central banks?

yeah i brought my japanese gf to that hospital before when she fell sick in bangkok, it was her idea in fact, very good indeed.
